Dry Needling
Dry needling is an invasive procedure where a fine needle is inserted into the skin and muscle.
How can it help?
Dry needling may decrease pain, improve range of motion, and reduce the sensation of muscle tightness.
How does it work?
The needle acts as a stimulus which can lead to a local ‘twitch response’ which may alter the tension of muscle fibres, blood flow also increases to the area and increases oxygenation. Dry needling may also influence both the central and peripheral nervous system and reduce sensitisation to pain.
Are there any reasons why I shouldn’t have dry needling?
If you have a phobia of needles, dry needling probably isn’t the treatment for you. Dry needling should also be avoided over areas or limbs with lymphoedema due to increased risk of infection.
